Esri Software Access

Information and links to Esri software and data for the JHU community

ArcGIS Pro is the latest professional desktop GIS application from Esri. Some of its key features include integration with ArcGIS Online and Python 3, combined 2D and 3D data analysis and visualization capabilities, and 64 bit architecture. The video below does an excellent job demonstrating some of its key capabilities:

ArcGIS Pro is resource-intensive. Before installing, make sure your computer meets the minimum, if not recommended requirements, to run this software.

Visit Esri's ArcGIS Pro system requirements page for version 3.0 and 3.1. Note that the requirements will differ by ArcGIS Pro version.

Use this ArcGIS Pro system requirements page if you are installing ArcGIS Pro Version 2.9.  Click the link the "Check your computer's ability to run ArcGIS Pro 2.9. to run a diagnostic to check your computer's hardware.

ArcGIS Pro 2.8 and 2.9 Crashes When Using Symbology

There have been reports of students experiencing system crashes when attempting to change the symbology of a layer in ArcGIS Pro 2.8 and 2.9. This is a known bug related to recent Microsoft .NET updates. Patches for both ArcGIS Pro 2.8 and 2.9 are now available.

If you are running ArcGIS Pro 2.8 or 2.9 and cannot update to ArcGIS Pro 3.0, please download and install the patch for your software version from the Software Downloads tab.

Transitioning to ArcGIS Pro 3.0 and above

ArcGIS Pro 3.0 is a major software update. Make sure your computer meets the new system requirements. You will also need to make sure you've downloaded and installed Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime 6.0.5 - Windows x64 onto your machine. ArcGIS Pro 3.0 will not run without this.

Because 3.0 is a major release, ArcGIS Pro project files created and/or saved in ArcGIS Pro 3.0 will not open when using an older ArcGIS Pro 2.x software version (review full documentation here). If you are working on a research team or are in a class, check with your research team or instructor to make sure you install the correct version of ArcGIS Pro. Regardless of which version you use, make sure you create backups of your ArcGIS Pro projects.

If you install ArcGIS Pro 3.0 and need to revert to 2.9 or older, uninstall ArcGIS Pro, and re-install an older version.

If you are an ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) user, we strongly recommend transitioning to ArcGIS Pro. ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.1, the latest version of the ArcGIS Desktop suite software, will be supported until March 2, 2026. However, Esri will no longer be releasing new features or enhancements for the software and will instead be focusing on ArcGIS Pro.

Projects created in ArcMap (.mxd files) can be imported into ArcGIS Pro (but not vice versa). Documentation on this process is available here
