More Sources for Statistics and Data
Finding reliable statistics and data can be difficult, and you want to get them from trustworthy sources.
Here are some sites and suggestions for finding statistics and data about health care costs and projects, specific demographic groups, and many other related topics.
The United States Government -- The simple site "www.usa.gov" will take you to the portal for all government information. You can search by keyword, agency, and other ways.
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), DHHS -- Data on healthcare expenditures; reports about specific populations such as children, women, and minorities; and much more.
American Hospital Association -- Its "Research and Trends" section has statistics and reports about health care costs, hospital financing, and much more.
American Hospital Directory -- Data for 6,000+ U.S. hospitals, from public and private sources such as Medicare claims data, hospital cost reports, and other data from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Consumer Price Index (CPI) -- This Bureau of Labor Statistics site lists the CPI for medical services and medical commodities. Note that specific items are not listed, however, only generalities such as "dental services" and "prescription drugs."
Encyclopedia of Associations -- These databases (national, regional./state, international) can all be searched together and supply contact information and descriptions of thousands of associations throughout the world. These groups can often supply targeted statistics about what they do.
National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) -- The CDC's National Center for Health Stats has data about diseases and illnesses, demographic groups, individual states, births, life expectancy, and more.
National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (CDC) -- Includes stats such as the leading causes of fatal and non-fatal injuries.
Statistical Abstract of the United States -- Comprehensive summary of "statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States. Data sources include the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and many other Federal agencies and private organizations."
U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) -- Try clicking "Publications" (top left), By Subject. This site also includes testimony and other information about health care cost projections and related topics.
World Almanac and Book of Facts -- Quickly and concisely provides data from the statistical sources
that are otherwise time-consuming to use. Good for some market
research determining demographic data and hard numbers, treatments,
market growth by condition. Also gives reasons for ER visits, physician
office visits, drugs most frequently prescribed, transplant data, etc.(Pages 180-204; Vital Stats pp.211+)
Print version much better than online. In Reference Office, M-Level, AY67. W5 2009.
