The AFANA website features biographies of most of the directors in the collection in addition to other background information about the films. Extensive research has been done on the directors and production companies. Many researchers discover films by searching the catalog of past showings.

In the event that the library catalog and AFANA website do not elicit the desired results, there are other resources available that may help you locate particular 16mm films.
- Prelinger Archive Prelinger Archives holds approximately 11,000 digitized and videotape titles (all originally derived from film) and a large collection of home movies, amateur and industrial films acquired since 2002. Its primary collection emphasis has turned toward home movies and amateur films, with approximately 18,000 items held as of Spring 2021. Its goal remains to collect, preserve, and facilitate access to films of historic significance that haven't been collected elsewhere. Included are films produced by and for many hundreds of important US corporations, nonprofit organizations, trade associations, community and interest groups, and educational institutions.

- Phoenix Film and Video This is the YouTube channel for The Phoenix Learning Group, Inc. In 1973, Heinz Gelles and Barbara Bryant formed a company called Phoenix Films & Video, committed to producing quality educational enrichment films for libraries, universities, and special interest groups. After Phoenix Films became established, BFA Educational Media was purchased from CBS. In 1993, Phoenix moved its corporate headquarters from New York City to St. Louis, Missouri, at which time all company divisions were organized as The Phoenix Learning Group, Inc. In 1997, Phoenix acquired Coronet/MTI Films and its award-winning collection of educational videos and multimedia programs from Simon & Schuster, the publishing operation of Viacom, Inc. Approximately 6,000 titles are now under the Company's ownership or control. Phoenix currently provides quality educational content in a variety of formats, including DVD, video and digital streaming.
- Periscope Film As of 2009, Periscope Film LLC has accumulated over 3000 rare films chronicling the history of the Navy, Marines, Army, Coast Guard, Air Force, and civil aviation as well.
- American Genre Film Archive AGFA exists to preserve the legacy of genre movies through collection, conservation, and distribution.
- Folkstreams.net Folkstreams.net has two goals: to build a national preserve of hard-to-find documentary films about American folk or roots cultures, and to give them renewed life by streaming them on the internet.
- Paley Archive The Paley Archive is made up of over 160,000 television and radio programs and advertisements, covering more than a century of media history, beginning with a 1918 speech by labor leader Samuel Gompers. The collection spans all genres: comedy, drama, news, public affairs, performing arts, children's, sports, reality, animation, and documentary. The Archive also includes an international presence, with assets collected from seventy countries.
