Other Local Collections
Finding archival collections can be particularly tricky. There are a few places you can get started, however. Below you'll find a list of databases that will help you find archival collections. But, in the Fall of 2024, Joseph Plaster's Queer Archives class created a site that maps out local queer archives and includes a timeline of queer archival material in Baltimore.
- Archive GridA database for locating special collections worldwide. Search for family and corporate histories, personal papers, and historical records. This collection is focused on the underground and alternative publications of sexual communities and demonstrates historic restrictive values of publication of erotic or sexually explicit materials. This collection began with a donation of gay male erotica, which currently makes up the majority of the collection. However, the goal is to collect broadly across sexualities and genders. The works range from the 1930s to the 2000s and are predominantly created by groups who were marginalized and persecuted during a time when subscription services to publications were necessary to build a safe community around sexual expression. Works include Tom of Finland, Alan Moore, several zines, artists' books, and photography. We are continually collecting materials for this collection.
- Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Baltimore and Central Maryland RecordsUniversity of Baltimore. This collection documents the history of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Baltimore and Central Maryland (GLCCB) between 1979 and 2015. The bulk of the collection is a set of "Gay Life" newspapers dating from 1979 to 2014. The collection also includes GLCCB program files, GLCCB photographs and posters, Pride festival planning records and ephemera, artifacts from the former community center on Chase Street and The Hippo nightclub, and memorabilia from the community. Also present are nine video (digital files) oral history interviews conducted in 2012 for the Center's 35th anniversary.
