Toolbox and How To for LibGuides
Creating Video Tutorials
Use the information on the wiki for creating online video tutorials.
Instructions
Videos found here are our "heavy hitters" - the videos that appear in the Sheridan Libraries YouTube. These videos are for a larger audience, and are pulled down from YouTube into LibGuides. Link to these boxes, rather than the direct YouTube link. When videos are updated, the links will break, but the boxes will remain on your LibGuide, and the new video will appear in the box. So when we have a new video, you don't have to do anything!
- Find the best page to house your video (Databases, Evaluating, etc.)
- Add Captions to the Toolbox
- Upload video captions as a PDF in the captions box on the appropriate page.
- Create a new box for the video.
- Add a rich text section.
- Enter in the description, the link to download captions, and any other necessary information.
- Add the video
- Go to the video in YouTube, click share, then click embed.
- Change the video size to 853 x 480.
- Copy the embed code.
- Go back to the Toolbox
- Add a section for media/wiget to the box.
- Paste the embed code.
All videos in the toolbox must have accurate captions. This helps a variety of groups, including ESL students, and users who just prefer to read the captions, rather than watch the whole video. Captions are uploaded with the video in YouTube, and need to be included in the box with the video as a PDF for users to download. A separate box on each subpage contains all the captions for easy linking.
See the Handouts section of this guide for instructions on uploading captions. Captions should be available as links.
Reusing Videos on Your LibGuide
- Add box
- Select "Reuse Existing Box"
- Find the guide, then the box you want to reuse.
- Rename the box (optional)
- Save.
To keep things organized, some videos are in tabbed boxes with other videos. You may or may not want to use that particular group of videos on your guide. For example, the Database & Articles page has a box with vendor videos from Ebsco, ProQuest, PubMed, and JSTOR all together. But perhaps your users heavily use only ProQuest and PubMed databases. Instead of reusing the box, you can reuse the widget. When the widget is updated in the toolbox, it will still be updated in your guide, just as a box would be. Reusing the widget only gives you the flexibility to add commentary and/or instructions specific to your users.
- Create a box for the video or find an appropriate box in your guide for the video to live.
- Add rich text. Add commentary, link to the captions, instructions, etc.
- Add Media/Widget
- Choose "Reuse existing Widget"
- Search for the widget.
- Select the widget.
- Save.
