Comic Books and Graphic Novels

Books and Dissertations

Catalyst is JHU's online library catalog. It contains all of the materials (print, online, microform, manuscript, databases and AV) available at or through Johns Hopkins Libraries. Catalyst also shows materials from JScholarship, JHU's online institutional repository.

Searching for comics within Catalyst can be a little bit tricky. If you know exactly what you are searching for you should search for it by the author(s), illustrator(s), or title. However, if you are unsure of what you want but would like to browse, there are a few effective ways to do so.

  • The first would be to enter "Comic books, strips, etc." into the Catalyst search bar. This will bring results that have this listed in the subject field.
  • Another way would be to search for a comic that you know is present in JHU libraries (e.g., Watchmen or Persepolis). When you get your results, click on the title of that comic to open its Catalyst record. On the right-hand side of the screen, you will see an option for "Virtual Shelf Browse." After clicking there you will see a representation of all of MSEL's holdings that would be shelved alongside the comic you searched. As shelves are organized by subject, you should be seeing collections of comic books/graphic novels or books about them.
