Advanced Academic Programs

This guide is designed to help students and faculty in JHU's Advanced Academic Programs find materials and start their research!

What is the Research Skills Module?

This course will help students learn the foundations of how to successfully start their research process. Research Skills was developed based on research best-practices that many students miss in their high school and undergraduate education. The self-paced course allows students to learn the steps from developing a topic to creating an annotated bibliography at their own speed. Assigning this foundational course empowers instructors to focus on field-related content while students learn the vital research skills they need.

Help to Address Common Challenges

The Research Skills course will help address common classroom challenges when integrated into your classroom:

  • Student’s research papers seem rushed and poorly thought out

  • Some arguments in their papers seem disconnected or not properly supported

  • Students obtaining mediocre or minimal scholarly articles

  • Students struggle from getting from topic to paper

  • Students not utilizing JHU scholarly resources

How to assign the course so my students get the most out of it?

Students will see the biggest impact if they are asked to complete the Research Skills activities as part of a graded assignment in their for-credit coursework. The course has a series of activities, worksheets, and checks for understanding. This ensures that students are not only understanding the information but are able to master the skill through doing.
