News and Newspapers
Why Microfilm?
Not all newspapers are online, so microfilmed newspapers remain an important part of the research process. Microfilm preserves the newspaper in its original state so that you can see the placement of articles (front page or buried in the last section), original advertisements, and photographs.
How to Use Microfilm
The MSE Library Annex, in Room 127, has two ScanPro microfilm readers.
- Use is restricted to users with JHED ID's
- You will receive reservation instructions after you have requested microfilm items
The ScanPro machines are digital microfilm readers that you view on a computer screen and scan images to create your own digital files. We recently added multi-scan and auto-cropping technology to the readers to make it even easier to make digital files. Read instructions on how to use the ScanPro readers.
The Frary Library at the Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington D.C. also has a ScanPro machine available for use by appointment, Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm. Please contact a Frary librarian to book a time.
