Ways to Access Full Text

There are several ways to access JHU's online resources.

  1. If you are on campus, make sure that your device is set to be connected to Hopkins wifi (NOT as a guest)
  2. Never pay for anything!  Instead:

Try the methods listed on this page

    Ask your department librarian

    Contact Ask a Librarian:
    --Email asklib@jhu.edu
    --Text to 410-692-8874
--Chat (use the tab on the bottom right of the library home page)

The libraries get their journals and other materials through several sources, so there are several ways to find full text.

  1. In Catalyst (the library's catalog, on the library home page), search for words in the item's title.

  2. If you are searching for an article, click "Citation Linker" to enter more article details and save time:

  3. Most of our article databases will show you a FIND IT link (make sure you are on on Hopkins wifi or otherwise logged in so that you see them). For example, here are links to full text and FIND IT in Compendex and PubMed, respectively. If the FT link does not work for some reason, choose FIND IT, which shows you ALL of the ways to get to our full text.

Lean Library

This is a browser extension that makes it easy to get to all of your university's online resources, without having to worry about being logged in.

  • To see how to install Lean Library, please look at the research guide
  • Watch the 1.5-minute video on the Guide page 1
  • Guide page 2 -- How to install it
  • Guide page 3 -- A few more screen shots about what to expect

See the instructions on this guide's Google Scholar + Google Books page.
Zotero's extensions
  • Zotero is a free software for managing references

  • See this page for Zotero extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari

  • To save papers to Zotero directly:  clicking the icon saves the citation data (e.g. journal, authors, title) and the PDF

  • Zotero also allows export as a Bibtex file, which is useful when writing papers with LaTeX

  • Once PDFs are saved to Zotero, just double-click on Zotero to access the PDF directly

Also, the plugin has a “reload via proxy” option -- this redirects articles as if you were accessing it through the library website, which makes it much easier to find articles quickly.

Zotero also shows you whether you have a retracted article

  • When a paper is retracted for some reason, you may not know that and may cite it

  • However, Zotero works with Retraction Watch to let you know when you plan to cite a retracted paper

  • Note: "This feature is limited to items with a DOI or PMID (entered in the DOI field or in Extra as “DOI:”, “PMID:”, or “PubMed ID:”), which covers about 3/4 of Retraction Watch data"

Johns Hopkins VPN Resource Center
  • Students and anyone else who is not JHU faculty or staff must request access to VPN
  • "Pulse Secure is now owned by Ivanti and the client is now called Ivanti Secure Access Client"
