- Student Employee 101
A guide to help you navigate the perilous world of Special Collections student employment!
Student Employee Guidelines
We're pretty laid back around here, but we do have some rules. Are you ready for them?
- If you have a planned absence, try your best to find a replacement. Either ask one of your student co-workers directly, or send an email to the listserv. Be sure to let Heidi know when you will be out and whether or not coverage was found.
- If there is an emergency and you can't make it to work (you're sick, you found you can only meet with your TA when you are supposed to be at work, etc), let us know via the Special Collections slack channel.
- You are allowed to have drinks at the reception desk. However, do not bring drinks into the workspace or Reading Room.
- You are allowed to use your own laptop when at the reception desk and in the Reading Room. However, do not be so engrossed in your personal antics that you are not keeping track of what is going on around you.
- Headphones are cool in the Reading Room if there are no researchers. No headphones are allowed at the reception desk.
- Rules pertaining to what researchers can and cannot bring into the Reading Room apply to you as well (seriously, no gum, flasks, or chewing tobacco!).
- If you work three or more hours, you receive a paid 15 minute break (if it ends up being 20 minutes, we won't narc on you!). Please let staff know when you will be taking it. If you need a break while staffing the desk or Reading Room, please remember that we will need to find someone to cover for you and you may not be able to take your break right away; try to give us advance notice -- "may I take a break in ten or fifteen minutes?" The break cannot be used to come into work late or to leave work early.
