Access to most of Esri's desktop software and web applications are made available through a named user authentication scheme: authorization for software such as ArcGIS Pro, Insights, and CitiEngine is linked to an individual’s JHU ArcGIS Online account. JHU affiliates must first sign into the main JHU ArcGIS Online organization, ArcGIS Online for Johns Hopkins, using their JHU credentials. Once a JHU affiliate logs in, an ArcGIS Online named user account will automatically be created for that user and assign permissions for the following:
- ArcGIS Pro;
- ArcGIS Insights Desktop;
- CityEngine;
- ArcGIS Online web applications.
Additionally, users automatically:
-
are assigned a custom role, "Publisher+Notebooks", giving them access to the privileges of the “Professional Plus” user type, as well as access to ArcGIS Online Notebooks;
-
have a credit limit of 5000 (reset annually at the beginning of August);
-
have access to MyEsri and Community & Forums;
-
have access to Esri’s Online Academy for free webinars and trainings;
ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap)
ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.1, the latest version of the ArcGIS Desktop suite software, will be retired by Esri on March 2, 2026. Esri will no longer be releasing new features or enhancements for ArcGIS Desktop and will instead focus entirely on ArcGIS Pro at its flagship desktop GIS software. As a result, Esri and JHU Data Services will no longer be providing ArcGIS Desktop licenses, unless in very selective cases, to JHU affiliates. As such, JHU Data Services strongly recommends migrating to ArcGIS Pro. Please feel free to contact JHU Data Services with any questions about temporary, special-case licenses or to discuss migration to ArcGIS Pro.
ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online for Johns Hopkins share the same fixed expiration date of July 31. No action is required by the user. These authorizations are automatically updated on August 1st.
